Student 1. William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor, born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. Today we are celebrating the 450th Anniversary of his birth
Student 2. We know little about the early life of William Shakespeare, but do know that at 18 he married Anne Hathaway and had three children, Susanna and then twins Hamlet and Judith. His son, Hamlet died in childhood. By 1592 he had moved to London and was working as an actor and playwright, and part of an acting company which later became known as the King's Men. This company had interests in the Globe Theatre on the Southbank and the Black friars indoor theatre, and by 1594 Shakespeare's playwriting began in earnest. He was a prolific writer, producing around two plays a year, he prospered and his reputation grew.
Student 3. His early plays were mostly histories and comedies - Midsummer Night's Dream, Henry VI, The Taming of the Shrew, Richard III amongst others. By early 1600 he was writing some of his greatest tragedies such as Hamlet, Macbeth and King Lear.
Student 4. Shakespeare spent the last five years of his life living in New Place in Stratford and died on 23 April 1616 at the age of 52. He was buried two days later in the chancel of Holy Trinity Church, Stratford and is also commemorated in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. Known as the Bard of Avon, William Shakespeare is widely accepted to have been the greatest playwright of all time and his poems and plays are studied and performed all over the world.
Student 5: Let’s ask students and guests. What is Shakespear for you? Is Shakespeare special for you? Why?
Fast Track to FCE” [4]
You will hear five people talking about the playwright Shakespeare. For questions 1-5 choose from the list A-F who is speaking. Use the letters only once. There is one extra letter which you do not need to use. Why is Shakespeare special for these people? What do you think each of the speaker want to say? What makes people like Shakespeare?
Match the original text with modern English.

Did he receive you well?

With much forcing of his disposition.

Did you assay him? To any pastime?

Niggard of question, but of our demands most free in his reply.

Tis most true. And he beseeched me to entreat your Majesties to hear and see the matter.

With all my heart, and it doth much content me to hear him so inclined.

We will bestow ourselves.

Read on this book. That show of such an exercise may color your loneliness.

There’s the respect that makes calamity of so long life.

And with them words of so sweet breath composed as made the things more rich.

Mark me.

So art thou to revenge when thou shalt hear.

Murder most foul, as in the best it is.

But this most foul, strange and unnatural.

Hamlet, thou hast thy father much offended

Come, come, you answer with an idle tongue.

O Hamlet, thou hast cleft my heart in twain.

She is importunate,

Indeed distract. Her mood will needs be pitied.

Alas, sweet lady, what imports this song?

Go, go, you question with a wicked tongue.

It makes me very happy to hear he is so interested.

It’s true and he asked me to beg you both to attend.

Did he treat you well when you saw him?

Letters so sweetly written that they made your gifts even more valuable.

We will hide.

It seemed like he had to force himself to be nice to us.

He didn’t ask a question but answered ours at length.

Did you try tempting him with some entertainment?

That’s the consideration that makes us stretch out our sufferings so long.

Read from his prayer book, so it looks natural that you are all alone.

Oh heavens, what does that song mean, my dear?

Oh Hamlet, you’ve broken my heart in two!

Go on, you’re questioning me evilly.

Hamlet, you’ve insulted your father.

Come on, you’re answering me foolishly.

She’s insistent. In fact, she’s crazed. You can’t help feeling sorry for her.

His most horrible murder. Murder’s always horrible, but this one was especially horrible, weird, and unnatural.

Listen to me.

You must be ready for revenge, too, when you hear me out.

Shakespeare used more English words than any other writer. He made up words and expressions too. The English language has changed since Shakespeare's time. So he is not always easy to read. But it's worth the effort. Read Shakespeare!
Dear students and guests! We hope that you enjoyed the play that was prepared by our students. Let’s say thank you for all the participants in the event where every student was involved.
